Brief History UMALCA, the Mathematical Union of Latin America and the Caribbean, was founded by its first General Assembly, meeting at IMPA, Rio de Janeiro, on July 26-27, 1995. It congregates the national mathematical societies of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. In 2001, UMALCA joined the International Mathematical Union as an affiliate member. UMALCA's activities are coordinated by an Executive Committee and a Scientific Council, both apointed by the General Assembly: Executive Committee: Jose Antonio de la Pena(President, Mexico) Rafael Labarca (Secretary General, Chile) Isabel Dotti (Argentina) Joaquin Ortega (Venezuela) Marcelo Viana (Scientific Coordinator, Brazil) Scientific Council: Marcelo Viana (Scientific Coordinator, Brazil) Cesar Camacho (Brazil) Gustavo Corach (Argentina) Jose Seade (Mexico) Mario Wschebor (Uruguay) UMALCA' s main goals are: o to foster the development of Mathematics in all the countries in the region o to contribute to the improvement of academic working conditions, and facilitate the interchange of researchers and students across the continent. o to support programs involving the participation of researchers in the teaching of Mathematics. o to create an evaluation system in order to select institutions offering graduate programs in Mathematics. As a focus for its activities, UMALCA has decided to launch the Latin American Congress of Mathematicians to be held every fourth year in some country in the region. The second General Assembly, meeting in Olmúe, Chile, in October 1998, set a number of general principles to be implemented by the Union's Scientific Council in the organization of the Congress. It also asked the Instituto de Matematica Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) in Rio de Janeiro to host the first edition of the Latin American Congress of Mathematicians, which was held July 31 to August 4, 2000 (www.impa.br/Conferencias/Umalca_2000/index.html). The third General Assembly, meeting in Cuernavaca, Mexico in September 2001, asked the Instituto de Matematicas of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) and the Sociedad Mexicana de Matematicas to host the second edition, which is now being organized. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1b.
